Smart Import Technology

Make use of Smart Import Technology for DMARC, SPF and DKIM first time setup.

Sendmarc employs smart import technology to assist you with 1st time setup and migrations. This means we have automated tasks that happen when a domain is added such as DMARC and SPF Import.

DMARC Smart Import

When you add a domain to Sendmarc we query the domain to see if a DMARC record is currently present in DNS. If there is an existing DMARC record, we will automatically import the existing DMARC settings.

This includes the following settings:

v Version
p Policy
pct Subdomain Policy
rua Aggregate Reporting Address
ruf Failure Reporting Address
aspf SPF Alignment Mode
adkim DKIM Alignment Mode
fo Failure Reporting Options
rf Failure Reporting Format
ri Aggregate Reporting Interval

Default tags will be removed unless it is specified with a different value or when it is considered a required field.

Should the record be invalid, the import will fail. The existing DMARC record will not be imported into the new DMARC record and a standard DMARC record will be set.

SPF Smart Import

When you add a domain to Sendmarc we query the domain to see if a SPF record is currently present in DNS. If there is an existing SPF record, we will automatically import the existing SPF settings.

This includes the following settings:
include Include FQDN
exists FQDN
a A Record
mx MX Record
ip4 Include IPv4 Address/Range
ip6 Include IPv6 Address/Range

"+" pass

"-" fail

"~" soft fail

"?" neutral

Record Qualifiers
all Termination Mechanism

Sendmarc ignores "Redirect" tags as we use this for DNS delegation.

Should any issues be found such as typos, multiple SPF records or anything that may invalidate the SPF record, the import will fail. The existing SPF record will not be imported into the new SPF record and a standard SPF record will be set. You'll have to manually add your Authorized Senders.

If your SPF record has not yet been verified/delegated you can choose re-import the existing SPF record, by click Re-import SPF Settings within Domain Management > SPF Settings interface.

DKIM Smart Import

DKIM Keys are not automatically imported. To import DKIM key you'll need to first enable DKIM Public Key Hosting and ensure that you've got enough DMARC reporting data for Sendmarc to identify the DKIM keys being used.

To import your DKIM keys, click the Import Public Keys button within Domain Management > DKIM Settings interface. This option will remain available until your DKIM key has been verified/delegated. Always validate the list of DKIM keys against your existing DNS records to ensure that no keys are missed as Sendmarc will only import the DKIM keys found within your reporting data.

This includes the following settings:

Selector Identifier
Value Key Directives
TTL Time To Live
Record Type TXT/CNAME

BIMI and TLS

Currently Smart Import is not available for BIMI and TLS Settings.
