# How to Create an API Token in Sendmarc

## Create an API token to consume the Sendmarc API to pull data into custom applications.

### How to Create an API token in Sendmarc

To get your Sendmarc API key, follow these steps:

1. Login to your Sendmarc Account
2. Click the **'Account Administration'** dropdown.
3. Click **'Users'.** The full list of users will populate on the main screen.
4. Click the pencil icon to edit the user. This will open the '**Edit the User**' dialogue.

5. Select the 'API Token' button.

6. Click the '**+**' button. This will create the '**Create a Personal Access Token**' modal.
7. Give the Personal Access token a name. We recommend using a descriptive name based on the application or purpose you will be using it for.
8. Assign the relevant rights to the API token that your application will need.
9. Click '**Save**'. Your token will be generated.
10. Select and copy your API token.

This token is as sensitive as your password. For security reasons we cannot show it to you again - please **save this token in a secure location.**
