Email Source Categories

Understand email source categories and categorize your reporting data.

Sendmarc makes use of categories to sort reporting data for email sources that are displayed in your reports and dashboards. You can change the category for each of your email sources to sort them accordingly.
Categorizing your senders only labels your data for reporting purposes and will not affect the configuration of the email source in your SPF record.

Categories

  • Uncategorized - This is the default category for any email source that hasn't been categorized before. Also, any new email sources that show up over time will be set as uncategorized in your reports.

  • Authorized - This category is for known email sources that send emails for your organization's domain and will be listed in your Authorized Senders Report. They're usually the same senders that have been listed in your domain's SPF record.

  • Forwarder - This category is for email sources that forwards your emails automatically. This happens with mailbox rules or distribution lists. For scenarios where DKIM passes but the sender isn't in your domain's SPF record, these emails show up as "Forwards" with a gray bar.

  • Unauthorized - This category is for email sources that aren't allowed to send emails for your organization's domain.

  • Suspicious - This category is for email sources that seem suspicious. They might come from a sender, place, region, or country known for suspicious activities. Use this to mark any unknown or potential malicious senders in your account for further investigation.

  • Unavailable - If the option to categorize an email source is not available, it may be because it is not a known Authorized Email Source to Sendmarc.
If you're unable to set a category on a known email source, please reach out to sourcegrouping@sendmarc.com with the relevant hostnames or IP's in question so that Sendmarc can classify this data for you.
